About CISO
The Computer Information Systems
Organizations (CISO) is a student organization benefiting Business and BCIS majors. CISO's
student officers coordinate all extracurricular activities, presentations, tours, and career
fairs for the entire semester. The primary purpose of CISO is to link UNT students with Dallas
/ Ft. Worth's largest and most successful companies and business leaders. With the support of
the UNT Information Technology and Decision Sciences (ITDS) department, CISO aids students in
preparing for graduation and moving into the world of business.
History
In 1982, a small group of students
majoring in Business Computer Information Systems identified the need for increased knowledge
of the practical applications of IT. With the support of the BCIS faculty, these students
established the Computer Information Systems Organization, commonly referred to as CISO. A
constitution was written and filed with the College of Business Student Organizations. The
constitution may be viewed in the office of the Student Organizations located on the fourth
floor of the Union Building on the UNT campus. The students appointed officers and established
procedures for programs, meetings, and tours. Early on, CISO officers recruited student
members from within the discipline of Information Systems.
Until 1992, CISO remained a relatively small organization. With the growth of IT and its
expansion into the functional areas of the business environment, officers and members began to
understand the need for offering membership to major areas of study including Computer
Science, Accounting, and Business Administration. As a result, CISO's membership base almost
tripled in size. Increased awareness and student involvement gained recognition for CISO as a
professional student organization committed to its objectives.
Purpose
CISO was formed to provide its members with assistance in learning more
about Information Technology (IT) within the business environment and establish networking
opportunities for future graduates. CISO accomplishes this primarily through formatted program
meetings featuring guest speakers from various regional businesses. In addition, CISO offers
numerous tours throughout each full-length semester. These tours are designed to provide
members with a visual perspective of the variations within IT environments across the
industries. These programs and tours provide opportunities for members to interact with local
IT employers and increase their overall awareness of the latest developments within
Information Technology.
Benefits
Company Meetings
During the semester,
CISO's program director coordinates between 8-10 on-campus programs, during
which different companies come to UNT to give students information about the
different aspects of their businesses. The presentations usually last about
an hour and are filled with value-added information to help the students
determine which companies they would like to pursue career opportunities
with. Meetings provide a casual atmosphere for students to meet and talk
with potential employers, and fellow students, while
learning about real world applications of classroom material. Refreshments
are provided for all members and business professionals attending the
meeting.
Company Tours
CISO's tour director organizes between 1-2 off-site tours of different
corporate facilities and computing centers. These tours give students
technical information about how data centers operate, and offer students the
opportunity to view all kinds of equipment from mainframes to silos. Not
only do these tours provide information and educational experiences, but
they also offer exposure to business operations, which will help prepare
students for the corporate environment.
Career Fair
Each semester, CISO holds a career fair in the Silver Eagle Suites at the
Union of the University of North Texas. This career fair gives students the
opportunity to network with recruiters from various companies and become
familiar with many potential employers seeking graduating seniors. The
students get the exposure of meeting business associates in a professional
setting. The employers get to meet upcoming graduates and scope out the
competition. Students get the opportunity to meet representatives from the
industry, as well as, faculty that support CISO.
Opportunities
Most importantly, CISO gives students the opportunity to learn about the
field of work they are preparing for through networking with fellow
students, faculty members, college recruiters, and employees of significant
companies from the Dallas / Ft. Worth area and beyond. In addition, many
different leadership positions are available for students of all experience
levels, from freshman to graduate students. Once an officer position becomes
available, CISO members are given the opportunity to nominate and vote for
their officers of choice. CISO is also a great extracurricular organization
to add to your resume.
